Validation engineer

Validation engineer

I - What is a validation engineer?

What is its role?

Its role is to ensure that the product meets functional and technical requirements. The validation engineer defines the strategy and the acceptance criteria, plans the campaigns, sets up the resources (benches, tools, data), supervises the execution, analyzes the results, qualifies the anomalies and makes the validation decision (go/no-go).

What are its missions?

  • Define the validation strategy: objectives, scope, test levels (functional, system, integration, performance, security), entry/exit criteria.
  • Structure traceability to requirements (requirements matrix → scenarios → results matrix).
  • Write validation plans, control plans, recipe procedures, and protocols.
  • Set up the resources: environments, benches, ALM tools/requirements management, CI/CD, data sets.
  • Manage campaigns (internal, partners, customer sites), manage non-regression and reproducibility.
  • Analyze the results, decide on compliance and recommend the go/no-go.
  • Qualify anomalies, pilot corrective actions and validate corrections.
  • Conduct the acceptance at the factory or on the customer site and formalize the acceptance reports.
  • Produce validation reports, integration reports and quality dashboards.
  • Drive the continuous improvement of methods, tools, data and processes.

Who are its main interlocutors?

The validation engineer collaborates with the Product Owner and the professions/customers on a daily basis to set the acceptance criteria. The project manager/PMO to set up the schedule. Quality and compliance to apply processes. System and software architects to define the technical scope. Les test teams (QA, testers, automation) that he supervises on a daily basis. Developers to qualify anomalies and validate corrections. Transverse functions: DevOps/CI-CD, infrastructure, network, security, as well as industrialization, production and operation. Support and maintenance for on-run monitoring. Key users and operators for field feedback and according to projects, suppliers and technical partners.

II - What are the skills and qualities required to do this job?

Technical skills

  • Validation and qualification : V&V methodology, test strategy, control plans, control plans, acceptance criteria, protocols and recipe files.
  • Requirements and traceability : management/traceability of requirements, coverage, regulatory compliance according to the sector.
  • Means and tools : implementation of test environments and test benches, instrumentation, design of test tools, reference data.
  • Automation and toolchain : Python, Bash, Git, CI/CD, ALM/Jira tools, defect management, reporting.
  • Systems : Linux and/or Windows, network/electronic concepts depending on context.
  • Documentation : test specifications, integration reports, campaign reports, acceptance reports.

Soft skills

This job requires constant rigor and a keen sense of quality. You also need to have good analytical skills and know how to solve problems. It is also necessary to have good communication and popularization skills given the diversity of interlocutors with whom the validation engineer is required to exchange. Finally, you have to be organized and know how to prioritize your actions.

III - What degree do you need to be a validation engineer?

A Bac+5 (master's degree or engineering school) in computer science, systems or electronics is the preferred way to approach validation at the right level. This course provides the necessary bases for reading and structuring requirements, understanding the architecture of a product and defining a validation strategy consistent with risks and acceptance criteria. The modules focused on quality, product assurance and traceability management are very relevant to prepare for go/no-go and compliance activities.

IV - Development prospects and remuneration

Development perspectives

A validation engineer has several development perspectives according to his aspirations and his sector of activity.

He can deepen the technical path by becoming an expert in testing, automation, continuous integration or cybersecurity, or else move into the role of validation architect responsible for designing comprehensive qualification strategies.

He can also evolve into project management, by accessing positions of validation manager, project manager or even Product Owner in an agile environment, where his skills in coordination and communication are highlighted.

Others choose related jobs, such as quality, regulatory compliance or consulting, especially in “critical” industries such as aeronautics, medical or automotive.

Finally, a managerial evolution is possible towards management functions for QA teams or, in the longer term, towards technical management positions.

What is the salary of a validation engineer in France?

Many factors come into play (missions, sector, scope, scope, size of the company, location, atypical skills, etc.). To give an idea of remuneration, here are forks from Apec according to the following parameters: Validation engineer, Bac+5 (engineering school), consulting firm with 599 to 1,000 employees, Île-de-France in 2025.

  • Junior (< 4 years of experience) : 3.7 to 4.5 million euros gross/year
  • Confirmed (5—8 years old) : 37.5 to 46.6 million euros gross/year

Conclusion

Basically, validation is for one thing: to deliver a product you can be sure of. The validation engineer puts the requirements in order, prepares the means, conducts the tests and assumes the go/no-go decision. It is a very transversal role, in contact with technical, quality and business teams, with clear indicators to manage (coverage, non-regression, anomalies). The result: fewer risks, fewer surprises in production, and customers who gain confidence. If this is the way you work, we will be happy to talk about it: discover our opportunities.
