What is an engineering consultant?

An engineering consultant is a professional who provides technical expertise to companies facing a one-off or recurring need for specialized skills, whether for short-term or long-term projects. Unlike an engineer employed by a single company, they work for an engineering consultancy firm—also known as a design office or service company—which assigns them to projects with various clients based on their skills and career goals. The core of the job is design. Managing and monitoring implementation

Reporting and capitalizing on results

Each project concludes with a debriefing: a technical report, a presentation of results, and recommendations for the next steps. This synthesis work is often just as important as the implementation itself, as it allows the client to take ownership of the solution once the assignment is complete.

What skills are required?

A solid technical foundation is the primary requirement, but it varies significantly from one consultant to another. A mechanical engineering consultant and an IT systems consultant do not have the same background or the same daily tools. What they share is the ability to mobilize specialized expertise within a specific scope, usually acquired through an engineering degree or advanced specialization in a given technical field.

Soft skills, however, are more universal. Frequently changing clients and sometimes industries requires an adaptability not necessarily found in an engineer who has spent their entire career at the same company. An engineering consultant must also know how to communicate with very different stakeholders: a workshop manager does not expect the same level of technical vocabulary as a technical director or a project manager.

Entry into the profession is usually through an engineering degree, whether generalist or specialized, depending on the target field: mechanical, electronic, IT, or civil engineering. A five-year degree (Master's level) remains the standard, whether from an engineering school or a university master's program with a technical focus. Some schools offer programs in partnership with companies, through apprenticeships or work-study arrangements, which allow students to gain initial field experience before even finishing their studies. Specialization is built gradually: a general core curriculum at the start of the program, followed by deeper study in a specific technical field through internships and elective courses.

Some professionals enter the field through alternative paths, leveraging significant technical experience gained in a corporate setting rather than holding a traditional engineering degree. This is particularly common for professionals who have developed specialized expertise in a specific tool, methodology, or sector and who leverage this hands-on experience when applying to engineering consulting firms.

What is the salary of an engineering consultant?

An engineering consultant's compensation depends on several factors: their field of specialization, level of experience, geographic location, and the size of the consulting firm they work for.
